I was born and raised in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of Nancy Duffy, a television newscaster, and Peter Musacchio, a martial arts instructor. After attending Niagara University and the University of Pittsburgh, I worked for publications in my hometown and in New York City. Since 1999, I have been a freelance journalist, writing for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York magazine, The New Republic, Slate, and many other outlets. In 2003, HarperCollins published my first book, The Bielski Brothers: The True Story of Three Men Who Defied the Nazis, Built a Village in the Forest, and Saved 1200 Jews. It has been translated into French, Catalan, Japanese, German, Italian, Hebrew, Polish, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, and Russian. In 2007, HarperCollins published my second book, The Killing of Major Denis Mahon: A Mystery of Old Ireland, which tells the story of paupers in rural Ireland who rose up to assassinate their landlord during the Great Irish Famine of the 19th century. It was an alternate selection of the History Book Club and was also offered by the Book of the Month Club and the Military Book Club. Currently, I'm writing a book for Scribner about William G. Sebold, a German-American double agent who worked with the FBI to smash Nazi Germany's New York-based Duquesne Spy Ring, in the most successful counterespionage operation in U.S. history. I live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with my wife, Laura Italiano, and daughter, Eleanor.
